TVLine.com: Robert Gant has landed a role on CBS’s hit freshman comedy, Mike & Molly, TVLine has learned. He will guest-star as Kyle, a bakery owner who is very sweet on Molly.
Mike gets wind of Molly’s never-divulged relationship with Kyle when he happens into a conversation with the handsome gent during a visit to Molly’s (hmmmm) “favorite bakery.”
But there’s more to Molly’s past with Kyle then I’m letting on. That reveal, which triggers all kinds of anxiety in Mike, is just icing on the cake — as is another bombshell about why the onetime lovebirds ultimately put a fork in their romance. Chuck Lorre a.k.a. CBS's sitcom machine is at it again. His latest creation is Mike & Molly, which premieres Sept 20 at 9:30 p.m. on CBS.
TV.com: Tell me about your characters!
Melissa McCarthy: I play Molly and she’s just a mid-30's girl working as a teacher in Chicago. She's kind of the caretaker of her family. And for the first time in her life, I think, she’s going to take a little bit of time and put some of that attention on herself. She meets this guy Mike and is smitten right from the beginning. So a delightful little love story.
Billy Gardell: Mike is a fun guy to play because he’s really good at his job. He’s also got his struggles. But when he’s around Molly—like she was saying, they really are in love and he can’t seem to get it together when he’s around her. He bumbles in that wonderful way that you do when you meet a girl you like.
TV.com: How did you two develop on-screen chemistry?
Billy: You know what? I think it was there from day one. I got along with Melissa right away. Now she’s probably going to say she hates me, but that's okay if she does.
Melissa: Can we go to a single phone line? [laughs]
Billy: No, it was right away, right?

While the new sitcom "Mike & Molly" spins around two single people who hook up at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting, the stars and creative team insist the show isn't about being fat. Instead, they say, it's about people who happen to be fat.
"The questions feel a little bit like Hollywood is going, 'Are there fat people out there where you come from?'" joked actor Billy Gardell, who plays Mike.
"Mike & Molly" is the brainchild of Mark Roberts, working again with Chuck Lorre ("Two and Half Men"), who serves as an executive producer.
"I would hope that if this show does anything, it's not going to start a trend of 90 shows about fat people, because that's not what we're about," he said.
"But if it starts a trend of putting people with different kinds of flaws that are real on TV, I think everybody will breathe a sigh of relief."

Billy Gardell, who's been traipsing around the country for years as a standup, has one of the fall season's plum roles in CBS's Mike and Molly. He's Mike Biggs, a cop who has gained the equivalent of his own personal partner in the years since the police academy. Mike sees Molly Flynn at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting, and the result is love. The show, exec produced by Chuck Lorre, who's adding to CBS's biggest comedy hits with Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory, is a sweet and funny relationship comedy about two people who happen to be overweight.
It's a big, fat role for a big, fat man. "I broke a chair before I came over here," he told TV critics. "I'm not kidding." And it's appreciated: "When you're a fat guy in Hollywood, you're the bad guy, the cop, or the neighbor. That's what you're doing. 'Bring them to me.' 'You kids get out of here.' 'She's going to kill us both.' "
Mingling with the stars at a swell party Wednesday night, Gardell explained the current sitcom renaissance, in which many new shows treat their characters with kindness, and find humor in lovable behavior. Coming this fall to CBS is “Mike & Molly,” a love-story sitcom featuring a couple who bond at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting. Starring Billy Gardell and Melissa McCarthy, the show arrives from Chuck Lorre and Mark Roberts. Lorre admits that it is unusual.
“We had the courage and, I think, the wisdom to just cast people that are just people. ... When Melissa McCarthy heard about "Mike & Molly," she wanted no part of it. "Before I read it, just the thought of it upset me," said the 39-year-old actress and Plainfield native said in a recent interview. "Mike & Molly" is a new CBS comedy for fall, and it follows the relationship of the title characters, who get to know each other at Overeaters Anonymous meetings.
McCarthy, who played chef Sookie St. James for seven seasons on "Gilmore Girls and has appeared in films such as "The Nines" and "The Back-up Plan," had to be talked into even reading the script, which she feared might contain "potshots and cheap writing."After she was told that the comedy would be shot near her house, would have the easier hours of a multicamera sitcom and was co-created by comedy guru Chuck Lorre, she finally relented and read it.

Melissa McCarthy has landed the Molly role on the Chuck Lorre-produced "Mike and Molly.", confirms The Hollywood Reporter.
"Molly" is a multicamera romantic comedy about Mike (Billy Gardell), an overweight, charming police officer, and Molly (McCarthy), a pretty and plump woman, who meet at Overeaters Anonymous.
"Gilmore Girls" and "Samantha Who?" alumna McCarthy was an early favorite for the role. She is repped by TalentWorks and Benderspink.
